Creating Yarn
After throwing myself into weaving, and realising it was a craft that was definitely sticking around in my life, I wanted to give myself a little more control over the finished project. This meant creating my own yarn. At the time, I was living in the motorhome and didn’t have the floor space to squeeze a traditional spinning wheel in, so I opted for a desktop electric spinner. What a revelation. Suddenly I could make chunky yarn, rustic yarn, blend colours. It opened up a lot of doors for my weaving, and helped me create the pieces I had only been able to imagine previously.
These days I use a more traditional wheel, powered only by my own feet, which I’ve surprisingly found to be a lot quicker and allows me a lot more control over the yarn I’m creating. Spinning has become a therapeutic activity for me, and something I enjoy doing on the evenings where I don’t fancy working, but would still like to be productive in some way.
